Mattie's father was David Henry Holland and her mother was Temperance E. "Tempie" Dukes.  Her paternal grandparents were Lewis Holland and Caroline Sapp. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Albert, John H., Ezekiel, Daisy, Ethelinda, Edna, Francis, Effie Mae and Elizabeth "Scrap".
