1   Davis' father was James Hart and his mother was Nancy Strayhorn.  His maternal grandparents were Gilbert Strayhorn and Margaret Roan. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Gilbert, James, John, Joseph, Samuel, William, Elizabeth, Jane, Miriam and Sarah.1
