Claus was born on May 2nd, 1835.1   Claus' father was Johan Georg Harms and his mother was Anna Katharina Bruning. He had a brother and two sisters, named John Friedrich, Christina Margaretha and Anna Sophia.  He was the second youngest of the four children.1
