POSSIBLE ENGLISH BACKGROUND OF GILES GIBBS OF WINDSOR, CONN.

GILES GIBBS - Born about, 1590-1595, possibly South Perrot, descended from William Gibbs Esq. & Mary Newcourt of South Perrot. Giles m. (1)____, (name unknown), July 29, 1617, Alford, Somerset. (Reference: Dwellys Transcripts of the Bishops Transcripts). Alford is a small village between Somerton & Bruton and there are no parish records there, earlier than the 1700's. He was in Crewkerne, Somerset, at least from 1618, where he came in contact with Rev. John Warham.
Rev. John Warham, bpt. October 9, 1595, Crewkerne, s. of Richard Waring, graduated from Oxford in 1618 and was ordained, May 23, 1619, at Silverton, Devon. On June 17, 1619 he was granted a license to marry Cecilia Hatch of Cullompton, Devon. At the time he was living in Witheridge, Devon. After his father died in 1623 he returned to Crewkerne. He became the Rector there and began preaching Puritanism. His sister, Magdalem Warham, married a George Gibbs and they had six children baptised in Crewkerne between 1620 and 1633. George may have been a brother of Giles Gibbs.
In 1627, Bishop William Laud removed Warham from his pulpit in Crewkerne because of his Puritan views. During his stay there he had a great effect on a number of families there and he influenced them to emigrate to New England. These included the families of Humphrey Pinney of Broadway and William Phelps, George Hull & Giles Gibbs of Crewkerne. After leaving Crewkerne in 1627, Rev. Warham obtained a living at St. Sidwell's in Exeter, Devon. Evidently Giles Gibbs followed him to Exeter. His first wife must have died between 1623 & 1629, because he m. (2) Katherine Carwithe, April 13, 1629 at St. Sidwell's. Their first child was bpt. March 28, 1629/30. It has long been claimed that Giles Gibbs came on the ship, "Mary & John" with Rev. Warham. This ship sailed from Plymouth on March 20, 1630, eight days after the above baptism. Also a second child was baptised, June 5, 1631. This indicates Giles remained in Exeter until June 1631 and soon after left for New England, because he became a freeman there on March 4, 1632/3.

(Reference: Dwellys Transcripts of the Bishops Transcript, Taunton, Somerset). He married (2) Katherine Carwithe, April 13, 1629, St. Sidwell's Church, Exeter, Devon.
Giles Gibbs may have come from South Perrot, Somerset, and possibly descended from William Gibbs & Mary Newcourt of South Perrot, near Crewkerne. Little has been printed on Giles Gibbs until the publication of an article by James A Rasmussen, C. G. , in the Jan.-Apr. 1985 issue of the American Genealogist, p. 32. Previously, it was believed he came on the "Mary & John" in 1630, with his first wife (name unknown), and a son, Gregory. Records at St. Sidwell's Church in Exeter, Devon, show he married, Katherine Carwithe there, April 13, 1629. They had children bpt. there on March 28, 1629 (Jacob) and June 5, 1631 (SSarah. This would indicate he did not board the "Mary & John" on March 20, 1630 to sail to New England. He probably came a year or two later.
Records in Crewkerne, Somerset show that a Giles Gibbs had children, baptised there in 1618 (Mary, 1620 (Margaret) & 1623 (Gregory). Since Giles brought with him a young son, Gregory, this appears to be the emigrant. Also, Giles' second wife was named Katherine. This means he was in Crewkerne until at least 1623 and probably until 1627. In 1627, Rev. John Warham, one of the "Mary & John ministers was removed from the pulpit in Crewkerne by Bishop William Laud, for his Puritan views, and he went to St. Sidwell's Church in Exeter, Devon. Other Crewkerne families were influenced by Rev. Warham, including William Gaylord, George Hull, Humphrey Pinney & William Phelps, who came with Warham in 1630. It appears that Giles Gibbs followed Warham to St. Sidwell's but did not accompany him in 1630.
Giles Gibbs first settled in Dorchester, Mass. where he was granted land and ordered to build a fence for his cow in 1633. This fence marked to line of an abbatis, erected during the seige of Boston in 1776, which later became the boundary fo Boston Street. In 1634 he was one of the ten Selectmen chosen. He was once cited for "being defective in coming to the meetinghouse". In 1635 he was granted two acres next to Thomas Stoughton. Soon after he moved to Windsor, Conn. where he joined the First Church there. All of his children were minors when he died in 1641.
Family version:
Giles Gibbs, the immigrant ancestor of our family line, is supposed to have come from County Devon, England, He was a free man and had land granted to him at Dorchester, Mass. in 1633. In the following year, 1634, he was made a select man and soon after removed to Windsor, Conn., where he died and was buried May 21, 1641.

"He came from St. Sidwell's parish, Exeter, Devon, where Rev. John Warham last preached in England. He had a daughter baptised there June 5, 1631 and his first appearance in Dorchester, Maine was in 1633. He may have come with two other Exeter men in 1633, Nathaniel Duncan and William Hill.
