Jonathan Gazlay was born on Aug. 17, 1760 in Clinton, Dutchess Co., NY.
In 1776 (at no more than 16 years) he served as a private in Capt. Conklin's Co., Col. Freer's Regiment. In 1777 he served in Capt. Delevan's Co. -pg. 243, "New York in the Revolution".
In 1796-1798 Jonathan Gazlay was chosen Commissioner of Highways in the Town of Clinton. In 1799 he was chosen Pound Master. -Records of Crum Elbow Precinct 1738-1761. (Crum Elbow Precinct became Charlotte Precinct in 1762 and Town of Clinton in 1789..)
After marriage to Karinda Carter and the birth of the children, including Joshua, he became a landowner and pioneer settler in 1806 on lot 78 in what was then known as Cincinnatus, Onondaga County, now the town of Willet, Cortland County. -from Cortland Standard newspaper 5/7/87 on the occasion of a special dedication of markers for the grave of Jonathan Gazlay.
Jonathan "Gazely" appears in the 1790 U.S. Census in Clinton Town, Dutchess Co., NY. The 1790 record shows 1 male over 16, 4 males under 16, and 2 females. Jonathan "Gazeley" is in the index to the 1800 Federal Census, still in Dutchess Co. He appears as Jonathan "Gazley" at Willet, Cortland Co., NY in the 1820 U.S. Census. The 1820 record shows 1 male under 10, 2 males 10-16 and one as 45 and up; 1 female 16-26 and one 45 and up. The 1825 New York State Census shows 3 males in the family including its head, 2 females and 1 person entitled to vote. The 1830 Federal Census Index shows Jonathan "Garley" in Willet, Cortland Co., NY. The 1830 record shows 1 male 60-70, 1 female under 5, and 1 female 20-30. Jonathan does not appear in later Census records.
The newspaper (CR-Cortland Record?) reported "Gazley, Hon. Jonathan, a soldier of the Revolution, & for many years Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, d. at Willet, 7th inst., at 75 y." (CR - Sept. 22, 1835).
