His/her paternal grandparents were Josiah Dewey and Huldah Frost; his/her maternal grandparents were Sylvanus Griswold and Elizabeth Marvin. He/she had four brothers and three sisters, named Joel, Sylvanus G., Henry Rice, Sylvanus Dorr, Mary McIntire, Isabel A. and Harriet Rice. He/she was the fourth oldest of the eight children. He/she had a half-brother named Melville.¹
