Henri de Traci, seems to have settled in the County of Devon, and was the only man of noble birth in that county who stood firm to the king during the invasion of the Empress Maud, and , as he was an 'excellent soldier', he rendered considerable service 'in thise western parts'. As a recognition of his loyalty, King Stephen gave him the 'Honor and Barony of Barnstaple", which formerly had been enjoyed by Iahel, the son of Alured de Torneis.
His daughter Grace inherited his possessions.
