Russel's father was Samual Buel Day and his mother was Elizabeth Rockwell. His paternal grandparents were Jonathan Day and Hanna Page. He had a brother and two sisters, named Perley, Dorothy and Mary. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Roland A., Lester Merton, Ruth and Marguerite Gladys.-
