Daniel was born in 1862 in Pennsylvania.1   Daniel's father was Martin Custer and his mother was Elizabeth.  His paternal grandfather was Frederick Custer. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Frederick, Ephrain, Edward, Minnie and Rita.  He was the oldest of the six children.1
