His paternal grandparents were Simon Cooley and Anna Stowell. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Simon Foster, Dexter Stowell, Avery William, Edwin Avery, George Lemuel, Eliza Angela, Persis Maria, Fanny, Daughter and Clarissa Cordelia.
