John Bernard's father was Leholmes Frank Beard and his mother was Janie C. Boykin. His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Frank Beard and Catherine C. Howell. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Lloyd Elmer, Benjamin Frank, Harold L., Living, Living and Alma Catherine.-
