Excerpts from Myers Family History by Charles Edwin Myers-
Grandfather's family were Coopers by trade. A Cooper is one who makes Cask's, Kegs and Barrels.Grandfather taught two of his sons to make barrels. My father, Matthew Myers(long deceased)and his brother, George became Coopers and Carpenters. A third son, William, took up farming down near Newport, Arkansas. His family live there, yet, in and around Newport.
* See Nicholas Myer Notes for full letter by Charles E. Myers.
Grandpa Myer died in our home. At the time of grandpa's death, he and grandma lived out in the country. I think they owned a little piece of ground just outside of town (South Fork, outside West Plains, MO) At that time my dad and mom had three children. Their first child, a girl named "Nellie" had died earlier. That left them three children, namely me, Charles Edwin and William Elmer. He had been named "William" after dad's brother Bill.
I don't know who the Elmer was taken after. Elmer was about two years older than me. Then George Newton was the third one living. We all took down with the Whooping Cough and Pnemonia. Newton died first, then a few days later, Elmer died and they thought I was dying at the same time, so they held Elmer over for one day, thinking they would have a double funeral. But --the good die young and I got better! They buried Elmer alone. They buried the two others within one week.
While I was so near dying, Grandpa Myer was stricken with Paralysis and lived three days. He died in our home. He never got to go home after the two children died. There were three funerals at our house in three weeks time.(July 1905) I was too young to remember much about it but I do remember seeing grandpa in the bed where he died and I can faintly remember George Newton. He was younger than me.
Then dad got a job at St. Mary's, Missouri and we went up there. I suppose I was about four years older than Mattie. She was born September 7, 1906 in St. Mary's. We stayed in St. Mary's for almost three years, then we came back to West Plains for a short time. James Elvin was born three years to the day after Mattie was born. He only lived three days. He is buried in a row of graves that are next to grandpa. A Milling company in Lebanon, Illinois hired dad to make barrels for them and we went there. My sister Florence was born there January 17, 1912. Then we moved to Mammoth Springs, Arkansas and the last baby (Nanny Lee) was (still)born there on the Missouri side of the state line. Our front gate swung across the line to the Arkansas side. I am one of the few who can say they have ridden a front gate across the Arkansas line.
