William was born in 1817. William's father was Craven Peyton and his mother was Sarah Fleming Payne. His paternal grandparents were William Peyton and Mary Ross; his maternal grandparents were Dennis Payne and Nancy Combs. He had three brothers named Craven, Thomas and Presley Ross.-
