  Attended George Washington, the school of Rev Archibald Campbell, Rector of Washington Parish, Westmoreland Co., VA.  Here began the intimate friendship which lasted through life, between Washington and Marshall.  He accepted the agency of Lord Fairfax to superintend his landed estates, to make leases, collect rents, etc. and often accompanied Washington in his surverying excursions for Lord Fairfax and others.  He was Burgess of VA, Lt during the French War, and with Braddock in his ill fated expedition, through not present at the fight in which he was slain.  Major of the Culpeper Guards, in the Revolutionary war.  He distinguished himself at the battle of Great Bridge, the first engagement on Virginia soil and was at Valley Forge with his sons John and Thomas, at  Brandywine he saved the patriot army from destruction.  He was presented a Sword for distinguished service fro the House of Burgesses of VA through their Speaker, Edmund Randolph.  In 1779 he was sent  to reinforce General Lincoln in SC.  He joined Lincoln just in time to be shut up with him in Charleston and to share in the surrender of that city to the British.  Being paroled, he visited Kentucky in 1780 traveling on horseback and selected his beautiful farm of "Buckpond" near Versailles where he moved his family from VA.  He married Mary Isham(Randolph) Keith, born VA 28 Apr 1737 died KY Sep 19, 1809, 15 children who reached maturity.
