Her maternal grandparents were Jessee Kennedy and Dephia Kennedy. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Jessie N, Robert, James Francis, William N, Marion Macdonald, Florence, Martha Ellen and Dora Alice. She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
