Daniel's father was Josiah Barnes and his mother was Elizabeth Trammel. His paternal grandparents were Jedediah Barnes and Abigail Warner; his maternal grandparents were Phillip Trammell and Jemima Grymes. He had seven brothers and four sisters, named William, Thomas, Shedric, John, James, Trammel, Joe, Jennie Jane, Kate, Nancy and Elizabeth.-
