James was born on July 14th, 1601 in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England.1   James' father was William Phelps.  His paternal grandfather was James Phelps. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, William, George, Richard, Mary, Mary (Marie), Elizabeth and Dorothy.  He died at the age of 71 on July 14th, 1672 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut.1
