John was born on February 2nd, 1866 in Philadelphia, Union Township, Marion, Missouri. John's father was Nelson Chatfield and his mother was Hannah Ward. His paternal grandparents were Oliver Chatfield and Charlotte Kimball. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Henry Solon, Andrew, Addison, General Jackson, Willis D, Mary Alice, Stella Mae and Sophia. He was the second oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 74 on August 9th, 1940 in Palmyra, Marion, Missouri. He was buried on August 11th, 1940 in Little Union Cem, Union Township, Marion, Missouri.-
