Kourkouaina was born in 0970 in Ohrid, Makedonija, , Bulgaria.  Kourkouaina's father was Theodoros Kourkouas and her mother is Nn Prokaina.  Her paternal grandfather was Theophilos Kourkouas; her maternal grandparents were Bardos Phokas and Maliene Maleines. She has a sister named UNKNOWN.  She is the older of the two children. She had a half-brother named Romanos.
