Her paternal grandparents were William Augustine Farren and Katherine Rita Murphy; her maternal grandparents were Ole Johan Osmundsen and Jensine Jensen. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Charles, George, William Augustine, Rita Marie and Dora. She was the second oldest of the seven children.
