Joan was born in Winchcomb, Gloucester, England.  Joan's father was Gilbert I "The Red Earl" De Clare and her mother was Alice Brun Lusignan.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard De Clare and Amicia Muellent; her maternal grandparents were Hugh X Le Brun "The Brown" De Lusignan and Isabella de Taillefer. She had a sister named Isabella. She had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named William, Margaret, Eleanor and Isabel.

‌Joan and Duncan were married in a religious ceremony about 1280 in Winchcomb, Gloucster, England.  They had a son named Duncan.
