Dougall MacSomarlidasson 
Dougall was born in Lorne, Argyllshire, Scotland. Dougall's father was Somerled Gillebridesson and his mother was Ragnhild of Man. His paternal grandparents were Gillebride MacGill Adomnan and FNU Sigurdsdottir; his maternal grandparents were Olav The Red and Ingibiorg Hakonsdottir. He had three brothers named Rognvald (Reginald), Arran of the and Agnus. He died in 1207 in Lorne, Argyllshire, Scotland.General Notes
This clan takes its name from Dougall, Somerled's son, who, after his father's death in 1164, held most of Argyll and also the islands of Mull, Lismore, Jura, Tiree, Coll and many others. The Celtic Christian name Dougall, or Dugald, is derived from the Gaelic 'dubh-gall,' meaning 'black stranger.' His royal descent was acknowledged by the king of Norway, and he styled himself 'King of the South Isles and Lord of Lorne.' His son, Duncan, and his grandson Ewan, built castles to defend their broad dominions including Dunstaffnage, Dunollie and Duntrune on the mainland, and Aros, Cairnburgh, Dunchonnel and Coeffin on the islands. Dunollie, a crag rising up over seventy feet, was probably fortified as early as the sixth century and was to become the chief seat. Dugall, who inherited as his share of his father's territories Lorn, Mull, and Jura. Dugall had three sons, (1)Dugal Scrag, (2) Duncan, (3)Uspac Hakon. Dugall Scrag and Uspac Hakon died without issue. Duncan was succeeded by his son Ewen, or as he is called in the Sagas, King John. John's line is said to have terminated in two heiresses, one of whom married the King of Norway, and the other Juliana, married Alexander, Lord of the Isles. [The Scots Peerage V:30]
