Alexander was born in Buchan, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Alexander's father was William Comyn of Buchan and his mother was Margaret Colhan. His paternal grandparents were Richard of Badenoch Comyn and Hextilda FitzHuchtred; his maternal grandfather was Fergus of Buchan. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Idoine, Margaret and Elizabeth. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, and also a half-sibling of unknown gender, named Walter, Richard, Jean and FNU. He died before April 6th, 1290 in Balvenie Castle, Scotland.-
