Meurug's father was King of South Wales Cadell Mawr ap Rhodri Mawr and his mother is Rheingar.  His paternal grandfather was Sovereign of Wales Rhodri Mawr * and his paternal grandmother is Angharad ferch Meurig *. He had two brothers named Hywel Dda ap Cadell and Clydog.
