Sam was born in 1907 in Texas.1   Sam's father is Frank Joseph *Ditta Sr. and his mother is Sarah *Mongusso.  His maternal grandfather is Callo *Mongusso. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Joe, Frank Joseph, Johnie, Tommie, Lee, Mary and Bessie.
