"Second son of Josiah and Sarah Wedgwood, and partner at the Etruria factory from 1790-1841. In the company of Thomas Byerley, nephew of Josiah Wedgwood I, he journeyed to Holland and Germany in 1790 showing a copy of the renowned Portland Vase in Jasper. In 1795 Jos moved to Surrey, leaving Byerley in sole charge of both the factory and the London Showrooms. It was not until the death of his brother Tom, in 1805, that Jos assumed full responsibility in taking over active management of the firm he had inherited from his father. During the early years of the 19th century the factory was experiencing financial difficulties, and for nearly 30 years Jos did his best to save the firm for the next generation. He was responsible for the decision to sell off stocks of tableware and other items from the London, York Street Showrooms, prior to the disposal of the rooms which were sold in October 1828. Tragically, the decision was taken to include models, moulds and trial pieces in this sale although other examples did survive in the factory collection, and subsequently came to form part of the core of the archive material administered by the Wedgwood Museum Trust. In 1823 Jos took his eldest son, Josiah III, into partnership, and four years later the younger brother, Francis, was to join the firm. Jos also became Member of Parliament for Stoke-on-Trent in 1832, but did not stand for re-election after the dissolution of 1835. He retired from active management with the firm in 1841, dying two years later. Josiah Wedgwood II s residence in Staffordshire was Maer Hall a building which was to play an important part in his nephew s, Charles Darwin's life. It was only the intervention of Jos who persuaded Charles's father, Robert Waring Darwin, to allow Charles to join the voyage of The Beagle. Jos declared that the offer of the voyage was too important to pass over, and together Charles and Jos rode to The Mount in Shrewsbury, the Darwin residence, to convince Robert Waring that Charles should join the voyage. Eventually he agreed, and Charles was deeply grateful to his uncle for the support which he had given to him. It was Charles who was to describe Jos as being the very type of an upright man, with the clearest judgement. I do not believe that any power on earth could have made him swerve an inch from what he considered the right course.
