John was born in 1779 in Rowan Co., NC.  John's father is Robert Jr. Shipton and his mother is Sarah X.  His paternal grandparents are Robert Shipton and Elizabeth Chapman. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Peter, Jesse, Samuel, Susan, Rebecca and Hannah.
