His paternal grandfather was Humbert I De+ Savoie and his paternal grandmother is Ancilla De+ Noyen; his maternal grandparents were Manfredo II Udalrich Di+ Torino and Berta D'+ Este. He had a brother and two sisters, named Pierre I De+, Berta Di+ and Adelaide De+. He was the oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother named Gebhard I Von+.
