Alain De+ was born about 1099 in Yorkshire, England. Alain De+'s father was Etienne De+ Penthievre and his mother is Hawise De+ Guincamp. His paternal grandfather was Eudes De+ Penthievre and his paternal grandmother is Agnes De+ Cornouaille. He had a brother and four sisters, named Henri I De+, Mathilde De+, Olivia De+, Agnorie De+ and Theophanie De+. He was the second oldest of the six children.
