"1st Lord Latimer. He is called "the elder" or "the father" to distinguish him from his son. In May 1271, he had letters of protection for four years to accompany Prince Edward to the Holy Land. He went on a pilgrimage to Santiago in May, 1275. He was frequently summoned for military service against the Welsh and Scots. He served in the expedition to Gascony in 1294, in the train of Edmund, the King's brother. He was captain of all the sailors for Gascony, and remained in Gascony until 1297. Even so, he was with the earl Warenne and the English army against Wallace, by whom they were defeated at Stirling on September 10, 1297. He fought in the English victory at Falkirk on July 22, 1298. In 1300 he was keeper of Berwick, and in June took part in the siege of Carlaverock."
