Robert was born in 1528 in Wiscombe, South Leigh, Devonshire, England. Robert's father was John+ Drake and his mother was Anne+ Grenville. His maternal grandfather was Roger+ Grenville and his maternal grandmother is Margaret+ Whitley. He had two brothers named Edmund+ and Bernard. He was the second oldest of the three children.
