General Notes

"John Crawford, the immigrant from Ayrshire, Scotland to Virginia, is often said to have been the son of Malcolm Crauford, the Laird of Kilbirnie. While there is evidence to suggest that John Crawford the immigrant was of the Kilbirnie family, there is also ample evidence which states that he was not Malcolm's son, who inherited Kilbirnie. However, he may have been the John Crawford/Crauford, son of Hugh Crauford, a son of Thomas, Laird of Jordan Hill. Said Thomas was an uncle of the aforementioned Malcolm, and thus Hugh and Malcolm were first cousins. Hence, it may be that the two John Crawford/Craufords have been confused. John the son of Malcolm stayed in Scotland, inherited Kilbirnie and married Margaret Blair, and his second cousin, John Crawford the immigrant whom tradition says married a woman named Winifred and immigrated "across the seas" to the American Colonies."
