Gervase was born before 1519 in Holme Pierrepont, Nottingthamshire, England. Gervase's father was Robert Clifton and his mother is Anne Clifford. His paternal grandfather was Gervase Clifton and his paternal grandmother is Agnes Griffith; his maternal grandfather was Henry Clifford and his maternal grandmother is Anne Saint John.
