Robert was born in 1470 in Clovelly, Devonshire, or Bristol, England. Robert's father was William Cary and his mother is Elizabeth Paulet. His paternal grandparents are Philip Cary and Christiane Orchard; his maternal grandparents were William+ Paulet and Elizabeth+ Denebaud. He had a half-brother named Thomas.
