Helen was born about 1462 in Lochow, Argyllshire, Scotland. Helen's father was Colin+ Campbell and her mother was Isabel+ Stewart. Her paternal grandfather was Archibald Celestin+ Campbell and her paternal grandmother is Elizabeth+ Somerville; her maternal grandfather was John+ Stewart. She had a brother and three sisters, named Archibald, Margaret Marion, Elizabeth and Isabel. She was the oldest of the five children.
