Ulick was born about 1545 in Clanricarde, Galway, Ireland. Ulick's father was Richard De Burgh and his mother is Margaret O'Brien. His paternal grandfather was Ulick De Burgh and his paternal grandmother is Grace Maccoghlan; his maternal grandparents were Murrough Carrach O'Brien and Eleanor Fitzgerald. He was an only child.
