James was born in Castle Douglas, Lanarkshire. Scotland.  James' father was Earl William Douglas and his mother was Countess Margaret de Mar.  His paternal grandfather was Earl Archibald Douglas and his paternal grandmother is Beatrice de Lindsay; his maternal grandparents were Earl Donald de Mar and Isabel Stewart.  He was an only child.  He died  due to died in battle of Otterburn on August 14th, 1388 in Otterburn, Berwickshire, Scotland.  He was buried on August 18th, 1388 in Melrose, Roxburghshire, Scotland.
