!Age 3 or 4 Daniel ran away from an orphanage. Was found wandering in the woods by a tailor, who had been out hunting for bears. The bear had treed Daniel. He was raised by the tailor. Daniel became a tailor.
When a young man, got a job in a cannon factory. His job was digging out the cannon balls. He became a blacksmith as he got a new position in the company. Came to Red Oak, Iowa. Got to working on the railroad, had men under him. He could speak a little english, so he was put in charge. Plus he was a blacksmith. He made really nice chisels.
When Carl was 4 months old, Daniel bought a homestead for about $4.oo an acre. All the way up to WWII, the Hallstrom homestead existed. The 4 children were raised there. Daniel did blacksmith for the whole neighborhood. The neighbors did his farmwork in return for his blacksmithing until the boys got older. He had bad rheumatism.
Emil gave a story when drunk about Jonas Isaacson (brother to Daniel's wife) could trace their geneology back to Isaac. Emil hated Jews, so he would only tell it when he was drunk. So, he'd say, you know we're Jewish. Grandpa Vernon says to put a great big question mark by it. 6 husky women escaped from Russia in a boat, and was probably great-grandma or something.
