His paternal grandfather was Ole Eriksen and his paternal grandmother is Marit Jonsdatter; his maternal grandparents are Ole UNKNOWN and Ingeborg UNKNOWN. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Ole, Jon, Arnt, Ingeborg, Marit, Berit and Kari. He was the second youngest of the eight children.
