Count Ernst III's father was Margrave of Nordmark Ernst II and his mother is Adelheid.  His paternal grandfather was Margrave of Nordmark Ernst I and his paternal grandmother is Fredeburg of Frommen. He had a brother named Liutpold.  He died in 0907.

He had a biological son named Count of Salafeld.
