Robert Sumner 
Robert was born in 1721 in Fairfax Co., Virginia. Robert's father was James Sumner and his mother is Mary Blanchard. His paternal grandfather is William Sumner; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Blanchard and Tabitha Leffingwell. He was an only child. He died at the age of 58 on December 1st, 1779 in Guilford, Nc. He was buried in New Garden Cemetery, Guilford, Surry Co. Nc.General Notes
Baptism: 1749 , Loudoun, Virginia, USA Note: Became a member of the Quaker faith. 2 3 Residence: Feb 1751 Council, Bladen, North Carolina, USA Note: The family were members of the Carver's Creek Monthly Meeting in Bladen County, now a part of New Hanover County in February of 1751. They were in the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting in Orange County in July of 1751, and finally the New Garden Monthly Meeting in Guilford County in 1754.

Publication: John & Margaret Thornbrough Canaday Page Text: Robert Sumner became a member of the Quaker faith in 1749 and the family was received and restored to membership at Fairfax Monthly Meeting, Loudon County, Virginia. There is no mention of a Sumner in Quaker records before 1749, so Phebe was probably responsible for Robert's conversion. In 1751, the family moved to Council in Bladen County, North Carolina and were members of the Carver's Creek Monthly Meeting in February 1751. Robert and Phebe [Beals] Canaday Sumner presented certificates at the opening session of Cane Creek Monthly Meeting on 7th day 10th month, 1751. Since Cane Creek covered a very large area of central North Carolina at that time it is not known exactly where they settled or exactly when they arrived. Their children are listed at New Garden Monthly Meeting which was set up in 1754 in Rowan County, North Carolina, so we presume they lived in that area. They remained there for the rest of their lives.

‌Robert and Pheoby were married in a religious ceremony on September 29th, 1746 in Waterford, Va. They had five sons and six daughters, named Bowater, Joshua, Robert, Thomas, William, Sarah (Sally), Abigail, Ann, Phebe, Prudence and Sarah.
