William was born in 1473 in Hooton, Cheshire, England. William's father was William Stanley Knight and his mother was Anne Or Agnes Grosvenor. His paternal grandfather was William Stanley and his paternal grandmother is Alicia Houghton. He had three sisters named Ann, Katherine and Isabell. He was the oldest of the four children.
