Geoffrey de Say . . . was born probably not later than 1135, and possibly earlier." (CP-XI-465) The Says were closely associated with the Mandeville earls of Essex, for Geoffrey's mother was a sister of the first Earl. "He appears as a witness to a charter of Earl William de Mandeville, br. of Earl Geoffrey, before 1166, and a charter of Henry II, executed at Winchester (1176-81), granting to Earl William de Mandeville all the land [in Normandy] which Robert de Say had rightfully given him." (Ibid) Much of the latter part of Geoffrey de Say's life was devoted to a lawsuit against Geoffrey FitzPiers over the estate of Earl William de Mandeville, which suit continued beyond the life times of the two parties. "He m. 1stly, Alice, widow of Ralph de Cahaines, and da. of Hugh Maminot. He m., 2ndly, Alice, da. of Aubrey (de Vere), 1st Earl of Oxford. . . . He was alive in 1212, but dead in 1214. Alice surv. him and was living in 1214." (Ibid)
