Mary was born about 1371 in Of, Clifton, Cheshire, England.  Mary's father is John Savage and her mother was Margaret Danyers.  Her paternal grandfather was Robert Savage and her paternal grandmother is Alice Amicia walkington; her maternal grandparents are Thomas Danyers and Isabel Baggalegh. She had five brothers and eleven sisters, named John, William, Arthur, Roger, George, Isabella, Elizabeth, Petronel, Margaret, Dorothy, Dowse (Alice), Lucy, Maud, Anne, Eleanor and Blanche.  She is the sixth oldest of the seventeen children. She had a half-brother named Peter.
