Les Moutiers-Hubert, Calvados, and Hambye, Manche were in the possession of descendants of Ralph Paynel the Domesday tenant-in-chief. Although Les Moutiers-Hubert was probably the original home of the family, and Hambye may have been acquire by marriage, it is impossible to speak with certainty on the
point. It was recorded in 1867 that the site of the castle at Les Moutiers-Hubert could be recognized. The extensive remains of the castle at Hambye are well known. [Anglo-Norman Families, p. 77]
