Son of Roger, Sire de Montbray. Born abt 1030; made Bishop of Coutances before 1066; commemorated by street named 'Rue Geoffroi de Montbray' in that town; commanded a section of William the Conqueror's army at Battle of Hastings. For various services to William, he was granted some 280 English mannors; life in England uneventful until 1088. That year William II (Rufus) faced most serious rebellion of his campaign. Most of his father's supporters were against him, even Odo, Bishop of Bayeaux and half-brother of William I. Geoffrey and nephew Robert de Montbray sided with Robert, another son of the Conqueror. From Geoffrey's castle in Bristol the two marched on and burned Bath before ravishing county of Wiltshire and were finally repulsed at Ilchester. The rising collapsed. Geoffrey escaped punishment and lived quietly until his death in 1093. [http://www.mowfam.freeserve.co.uk/page3.htm]
