His paternal grandparents were Roger I Hugh , Count of Montgomery and Josseline de Pontaudemer; his maternal grandfather was Guillaume II de Alencon and his maternal grandmother is Hildeburge de Beaumont. He had four brothers and six sisters, named II de Alencon, Hugh de, Philip, Arnoul Arnulf, Matilda Maud de, Adelina de, Adelaide de Puiset, Emma de, Mabel de and Sybil de.
