William Jenkins was born in Wales. At the age of 14, he visited his uncle in Ireland and fell in love with his cousin, Susannah WAlker. William's uncle was opposed to the marriage becasuse of their tender ages. Susannah was 13. They eloped to America in 1777 and married at the age of 15 for William and 14 for Susannah, then settled in Isle of Wright Co. Virginia. William joined the Virginia mil;ita when only 15 and served throughout the Revolutionary War, his exploits read like those of a mature man. After several years in Isle of Wight Country, they moved to Pittsylvania County where they remained until 1807 when they moved by oxteam to Ohio. He and his family settled in Cincinnati and bought 80 acres of land on the present site of Main Street, which he later sold. He then moved to Butler County and settled on Dry Fork

Before being known as Okeana it was called Tariff, and under this cognomen had the following postmasters: William JENKINS, January 14, 1828;
