Heilin ap was born about 1060 in Dyffryn Clwyd, Denbighshire, Wales.  Heilin ap's father was Einudd Gwerngwy ap Morein and his mother is Eva verch Llewelyn.  His paternal grandparents are Morien ap Morgan Gwerngwy and Gwenllian verch Rhys; his maternal grandparents are Llewelyn ap Dolphyn and Gwenllain verch Rhys. He had a brother and a sister, named Ithel ap and Hunydd verch.  He is the oldest of the three children.
