CHARLES SPELLED HIS NAME DAVIES, WHICH WAS COMMON IN BEDFRODSHIRE. a SEARCH OF THE MORMAN COMPUTER FILE INDEX (CFI) FOR BEDFORDSHIRE TURNED UP A CHARLES DAVIE, BORN ABOUT 1706 AND LIVED IN THE PARISH OF LUTON. He WAS THE SON OF, CHARLES, AS EXPECRTED. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE TO PROVE OR DISPROVE THE CONNECTION. AT CRANFIELD BEDS, ON 10-3-1673, A THOMAS DAVIE, SON OF ALICE DAVIE WAS CHRISTENED. NO FATHER WAS NAMED, WHICH COULD MEAN THAT THOMAS WAS BORN OUT OF WEDLOCK. CHARLES OF LUTON COULD HAVE DIED IN ENGLAND, SHIPPED OFF TO THE WARS, HUNG AS A THIEF. BURIAL RECORDS FOR LUTON FOR THE PERIOD AFTER 1727 ARE MISSING, AND NO RECORDS PERTAINING TO THE LUTON FAMILY HAVE BEEN FOUND FOR THE PERIOD AFTER 1725. ANOTHER STORY THAT CIRCULATED AMONG THE HEIRS OF CHARLES WAS THAT HE WAS THE SON OF JOSIAH, OR OF ONE OF TWO BROTHERS CHARLES AND JOSEPH, ONE A WEALTHY WINE MERCHANT, THE OTHER A GOLD LACE WEAVER. CHARLES WAS SAID TO HAVE COME CM TO THE COLONIES BETWEEN 1724 AND 1733, ALONE OR WITH A BROTHER, THOMAS, WHO DIED SHORTLY AFTER THEIR ARRIVAL. HE CAME FROM ENGLAND OR WALES. ONE STORY HAD IT THAT CHARLES WAS APPRENTICED TO A LACE WEAVER, DIDN'T LIKE THE WORK, RAN AWAY TO A SAILING VESSEL AND UPON HIS ARRIVAL IN PHILADELPHIA WAS INDENTURED TO A QUAKER FAMILY TO PAY FOR HIS PASSAGE. THE DIFFICULTY IN OBTAINING AN ESTATE WAS ATTRIBUTED TO INABILITY TO PROVE CHARLES A QUAKER, INABILITY TO PROVE CHARLES' MOTHER'S NAME, THE FACT THAT CHARLES LOST HIS RECORDS WHILE CROSSING A TURBULENT STREAM, OR THE FACT THAT CHARLES' WIFE Hannah BURNED HIS RECORDS FOR FEAR THAT IF HE RETURNED TO ENGLAND TO CLAIM THE ESTATES HE WOULD BE DRAFTED. MORE COINCIDENCE OF NAME AND AGE PROVES NOTHING. ON 7-35-1695 A THOMAS DAVIE AND A MARY NORTH WERE MARRIED AT WHEATHAMPSTEAD, HERTFORDSHIRE, A PARRISH ADJACENT TO THE PARRISH OF LUTON BEDS. THIS MARY NORTH MAY HAVE BEEN THE DAUGHTER OF WILLIAM AND ELIZABETH NORTH CHRISTENED AT CARDINGTON BEDS, ON 3-25-1677. THERE WERE , HOWEVER SOME FAMIULIES NAMED NORTH LIVING IN LUTON. THE CHILDREN LISTED ON THE PARENTAL CARD FOR THOMAS AND MARY DAVIS, SPELLED DAVIE, WERE FROM THE THOMAS DAVIE BOOK OF CHRITENINGS AND ACCOUNTS OF THE 6TH. DAY OF FEBRUARY 1718, SIGNED CHRISTO:EATON VICAR additional INFORMATION OF UTTER CONFUSION CAN BE FOUND ON PAGES 5, 6, AND 7 OF THE BOOK "DAVIS" A QUAKER FAMILY PUBLISHED BY GATEWAYPRESS INCORPORATED, FOR THE AUTHOR LEANOR M. DAVIS.
